Tim Kahl, formerly of Ripon, was promoted to the rank of sergeant recently with the Chula Vista Police Department in Southern California located near San Diego after some 15 years with the force.
Kahl was assigned to day shift supervision after being with the Homicide Division working murder cases in the city north of the Mexican border. He was one of two sergeants leading their teams on patrol. He recently graduated from the Peace Officers Standards in Training (POST) Academy in Sacramento becoming a master instructor who may now teach in police academies throughout the state. Kahl mastered the three year course while working his regular shifts.
He had been assigned to oversee DUI enforcement in the city for three years, working closely with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and often filled the post of acting sergeant on his shifts. Kahl was also a traffic motorcycle officer for several years.
He attended Central Catholic High School for three years and graduated from Ripon High after transferring to that school in his senior year. He played varsity basketball at both schools. Kahl earned his bachelor’s degree at San Diego State College and first worked at Costco where he managed a number of departments. After joining the department and working as a rookie, a team of burglars robbed that store by ramming a stolen car through the roll down front door.
Since he knew the store’s layout he ended up being called in from outside to drive a fork lift with a basket that held two SWAT officers with automatic weapons as they searched the tops of the bins driving down each aisle inside Costco. The teams were later captured in Los Angeles when they attempted a similar robbery.
