Owens Lake, once one of the largest inland bodies of water in the United States, shrank to nearly nothing in the early 20th century after the City of Los Angeles diverted water into a pipeline much like the tunnel diversion south state water purveyors are championing today for the Delta. Massive dust storms as captured in the photo now plague Owens Lake.
