Former Sierra High standout Lucas Widmer had a hand in helping Azusa Pacific’s football team capture a share of its fourth Great Northwest Athletic Conference title in six years last Saturday.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior tight end caught a 3-yard touchdown pass during the Cougars’ fourth-quarter rally that culminated in a 42-35 win over No. 18-ranked Central Washington. They also qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs. Seeded seventh in Region Four, Azusa Pacific (8-3) faces No. 2 Tarleton State (10-0) on Saturday.
Against Central Washington, the Cougars trailed 28-20 early in the fourth quarter before scoring three of the last four touchdowns in the final 9 minutes. Widmer sparked the comeback with his game-tying touchdown.
On Wednesday, Widmer was one of 15 Azusa Pacific players to earn All-GNAC honors, earning a spot on the first-team offense. He has 114 yards and three touchdowns on 13 catches this season.
