The season didn’t open as smoothly as the Sierra Timberwolves sophomore football team would have liked, but the squad surely is getting hot at the right time, blowing out the Manteca Buffaloes 34-6 Friday at Manteca High.
Sierra got a strong offensive showing from its starting quarterback Guillermo Nunez, who shredded the Buffaloes’ defensive unit for five touchdowns in the win.
Nunez hooked up with Jason Manuta, Robert Ramirez and D’Ari Abercrombie for a touchdown each, and threw two to Tyler Ray Hewitt.
The Timberwolves defense was led by linebacker Greyson Yarnell as well as Justin Dehart, Kyle Kuperus and Jesus Perez. Randy Dao also made significant contribution in the win.
Sierra will try to put together another road win Friday when they travel to Tracy to take on Kimball High. The Buffaloes will make the long drive east to Sonora for a VOL matchup with the Wildcats.
The Cougars were led by quarterback James Simerly, who tossed for four touchdowns. Included was a pair of scores to both Mike Perez and Joe Timmon.
Joe Gonzalez helped out, chipping in with 140 yards and long touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Weston Ranch had five turnovers, including three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
“Outside of the score, we didn’t play our best game,” Cougar coach Seth Davis said. “We had 200 yards tacked off in penalties and made a lot of mistakes.”
Weston Ranch improved to 1-2 in the Valley Oak League, 3-3 overall.
The Knights jumped ahead for good in the second quarter, when Danny Vos picked apart the Denair secondary for a pair of touchdowns. Vos linked up with Brandon Dotinga for the two scores, as he finished with three receptions for 56 yards.
Jacob Ruther guided the defensive unit with a game-high 10 tackles, followed by teammate Ethan Van Vliet who recorded nine. Clayton Blankers made his presence felt with a pair of quarterback sacks.
Ripon Christian will try and continue its winning ways when they travel to Turlock to take on Turlock Christian Friday.
