Manteca’s Lyon Colon and Blake Nichelson combined for six carries and seven touchdowns Friday night, as the Buffaloes pounded visiting Weston Ranch 57-7 in Valley Oak League football action at Guss Schmiedt Field.
Colon carried the ball three times with 1-, 19- and 35-yard rushing touchdowns as well as a score on a 65-yard punt return.
“It feels good to be back,” Colon said. “I had a hurt finger so I was really struggling, but I am glad I was able to bounce back.”
Nichelson also had three carries with three touchdowns on runs of 4, 22 and 37 yards. Manuel Gutierrez picked up the other Manteca touchdown on a fourth-quarter 47-yard run.
“We just came out 100 percent like we always do,” Nichelson said. “We played our game and got the win.”
In just his second game at quarterback for the Buffaloes (3-0 VOL, 7-0 overall) after having to sit out five games due to transfer schools, Hudson Wyatt was 6 of 11 passing for 110 yards with Trey Moreland pulling down three catches for 81 yards.
“It’s awesome to play with guys like this,” Wyatt said of Colon and Wyatt. “They work their butts off every week and are great athletes. I love being a part of this program.”
Garrison Reis started the season as the starting quarterback waiting for Wyatt to clear his sit-out period. Now he is playing linebacker and made six tackles with two sacks and a fumble recovery.
“I didn’t know I was playing linebacker until a couple of weeks ago,” Reis said. “I think we should have shut them out.”
Manteca coach Mark Varnum can now focus on the meat of his schedule which begins next Friday at Central Catholic followed by a home game against Kimball and the regular-season finale on the road against Oakdale.
“Weston Ranch did some good things,” Varnum said. “They stayed on the field, but once we got the ball we showed how explosive we are.”
Noah Deed was 9 of 12 passing for the Cougars (0-3, 1-6) with a 10-yard scoring pass to Chris Buttram (five receptions, 60 yards). De’Antae Lavan picked up 60 touch yards on nine carries for Weston Ranch.
“The first half we were able to drive the ball,” Cougars coach Ron Wayman said, “But they would come back with some big plays against us. They’re who they are — they are going to be the powerhouse this year and they are probably going to be way up there and go a long ways in the playoffs.
“But, to my players’ defense, they played their hearts out. We are blessed to have the Lavan twins (Deandre and De’antae) — they fought hard. No. 51 (Zyale Brown-Sanger) fought hard and Namir Brown-Sanger was phenomenal, as usual. It was a team effort and the score does not show how hard we fought and I am proud we played all the way to the end. We knew we were going to be a young team going against the VOL, but all I can say is watch out in the next couple of years.”
