RIPON – Billy Marr engineered two scoring drives in the final three minutes as Ripon Christian completed a come-from-behind victory on Friday evening.
The Knights trailed by as many as 15 to Waterford, a team with just one victory, but scored the final 20 points of the game to secure a 28-27 win at Modesto Christian.
For the third time in as many Southern League games, Ripon Christian was involved in a one-point game.
Last week, the Knights were thwarted on their final drive by a well-timed Le Grand blitz. The tackler knocked the ball out of Billy Marr’s hands, clinching the Bulldogs’ 15-14 victory.
On Friday, Marr was untouchable in the clutch.
After Derek Dotinga’s 1-yard run cut the deficit to 27-14, Marr crashed in from a yard out with 2:01 left in the game.
Kevin Kramer’s extra point made it 27-21.
Ripon Christian got the ball back and with less than a minute remaining, Kramer tied the game at 27s with a 3-yard run.
His PAT sealed the win.
Waterford had chance to send Ripon Christian to its second consecutive loss, but missed a crucial third-quarter extra-point. The kick was pushed wide.
Marr was 19 of 38 for 233 yards and one touchdown. He connected with tight end Jared Stuit on an 8-yard scoring play in the first quarter.
Ethan McMurray reeled in the two-point conversion on a pass from Travis Zuidervaart.
It was just the beginning of a big night for McMurray, who finished with six catches for 131 yards.
Kramer led a stable of Ripon Christian ball carriers with a 81 yards on 16 carries. Kramer came on in relief of Bryan Systma, who injured his ankle in the first quarter.
The Knights travel to Gustine next Friday.
