OAKDALE — For the first 21 minutes of the 1st half, the Lathrop High football engaged in a tight defensive duel with Valley Oak League powerhouse Oakdale.

Fourteen minutes and 56 total points later, the Spartans found themselves on the wrong end of an offensive onslaught, falling to the Mustangs 49-14 Friday night.

Oakdale scored 42 points in a 15-minute span, with all six touchdowns scored by different players. The Spartans offense found its rhythm in the third quarter, as Brian Terrell scored on a 33-yard run and Diego Chavez found Cameron Corner for a two-yard touchdown pass, but the Mustangs’ offense was too strong for Lathrop to overcome.

Terrell, filling in for the injured Jacob Devita, finished with 95 yards on 20 carries. Chavez completed 10-of-18 passes for 132 yards. On defense Terrell led the Spartans with 8 tackles, and Alex Valencia chipped in 7 tackles.

Lathrop (1-2 in VOL, 3-3 overall) will host Weston Ranch next Friday.
