It was a good opening season game Friday for Cole Williams and his Ripon High Indians.
They dismantled Golden Valley at Stouffer Field, 48-27.
"All the hard work we did during the summer is paying off," said Williams, who is in his first year as the official head coach for the Indians.
He served as interim coach late last season.
Ripon showcased plenty of firepower on offense led by junior fullback Kael Rangel and junior quarterback Andrew Shaw, who connected on big plays to Michael Evans, Ace Dougherty, Gavin Decena, Matthew Gaines, and Jude Viss.
Rangel scored three times, including an 85-yard kickoff return prior to halftime.
The first half was marred by penalties from both teams.
"We have a few things that we need to clean up," said Williams.
He added, "The guys may have been over-amped (in this first game)."
Ripon (1-0) was quick to capitalize on a 15-yard personal foul that was tacked on to a strong opening kickoff to midfield.
It took four plays for Rangel to punch the ball over from 10 yards. Alan Aguirre's extra point kick made it 7-0.
Golden Valley (0-1) answered back on its next possession with Isaiah Welch racing to the end zone from 20 yards out.
Ahead 7-6, the Indians came right back behind the arm of Shaw, who connected the long ball to Decena at the Cougars 4.
Shaw scored on the next play.
Ripon extended the lead in the second quarter. Shaw, who connected twice with Evans, found his big target Viss on an 11-yard scoring strike at the 8:37 mark.
Dougherty joined the scoring fray minutes later on a 4-yard run.
Down 28-6, the Cougars went with quarterback Gabe Richards, who early on proved to be a passing threat.
His touchdown pass trimmed the lead, 28-13.
Rangel took the ensuing kickoff to the house that all but dashed Golden Valley's comeback hopes.
Rangel, following an interception by Decena, scored his third touchdown early in third, adding to the lead, 41-13.
The Ripon defense came up with another turnover moments later with Armin Grewal recovering the fumble.
Two plays later, Xabriel Reyes' 33-yard scoring run helped implement the running clock to close out the game.
