S — Seth Villanueva 37 field goal, 11:54
STOCKTON — Sierra’s Seth Villanueva booted a 37-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter Friday night and those three points would hold up the rest of the game as the Timberwolves posted their first victory of the season with a 3-0 road win over host Weston Ranch in Valley Oak League football action.
“This feels great,” Villanueva said. “I’m glad we did this. I was excited and it was breathtaking.
“I knew it was going in as soon as I kicked it.”
Sierra coach Chris Johnson has never seen, much less been involved in, a 3-0 high school game.
“I don’t know that I have ever seen a 3-0 high school football game,” Timberwolves coach Chris Johnson said. “A ‘W’ is a ‘W’ — We’ll take it. Thank God we have a kicker.”
Sierra (1-2 VOL, 1-6 overall) held the Cougars (0-3, 1-6) to 110 yards, due in part to dominating the line behind Mustafa Rasuli and Christian Moore.
Rasuli recovered a fumble as did Christian Moore and Maximus Morales. Nick Guevara killed Weston Ranch’s best shot at scoring when he intercepted a pass at the goal line late in the third quarter.
Rasuli — who had four sacks along with his fumble recovery — was quarantined for the first three weeks of the season and according to Johnson is just starting to hit his stride.
“It was so intense,” Rasuli said. “Everyone was intense and they were all rallying up.
“This was our first win this year and it feels so good. We want more like this.”
Anthony Grady was the workhorse for Sierra, grinding out 64 yards on 24 carries.
“I play ball like I do because of tussling with my brothers growing up,” Grady said. “That’s what I grew up around, and because of that I play fearlessly.”
Noah Deed was 7 of 9 passing for 70 yards for the Cougars with Namir Brown-Sanger picking up 39 yards on two catches.
Weston Ranch had problems sustaining drives, often misfiring on first down.
“We played our hearts out,” Cougars coach Ron Wayman said. “You can’t start every offensive series first and 10 and end up first and 15 or first and 20.
“We need to fix our mistakes, look at what was positive and start getting ready for Manteca next week.”
