Starting off The McDonald’s Classic with a win was the most important thing for Weston Ranch. The squad answered the call, handling Oakland High 63-53 Wednesday during first round action of the Edison High hosted tournament at Delta College.

The Cougars (1-1) got a huge outing from Dylan Alexander who finished with a game-high 20 points. Teammate Daiveon Leverrett added 19 and Eric Duncan finished in double-figures with 13 points and also tossed a team-high nine assists.

The Cougars held a 26-15 halftime lead and never relinquished. They will continue action at 5 p.m. when they meet up with Bethel High of Vallejo.

“We didn’t execute as well as we would have liked to,” Weston Ranch head coach Chris Teeven said. “We could have all done a lot of things better, but we looked about as good as you could look after having nine days off. It was good for us to get our legs under us.

“Especially Duncan, who had his first practice Monday and played 30 minutes tonight.”

El Cerrito 67, Sierra 31

A poor shooting night plagued the Sierra Timberwolves, leading to a one-sided 36-point defeat Wednesday in the opening round of The McDonald’s Classic at Delta College.

Sierra got a double-digit effort from Emmanuel Elijah who finished with 10 points.

“We shot the ball terrible,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “We missed a lot of shots around the basket, but El Cerrito is a very good team so you have to give them a lot of credit.

“We’re looking to bounce back with a good performance against Chavez (today).”

The Timberwolves will be back on the court at 3:30 p.m. against Chavez High of Stockton.
