SALIDA — Rod Wright wanted his Ripon High boys basketball team to be competitive for the second straight day in the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoops Classic.
Unfortunately, another solid effort from the Indians led to a second straight loss, this time by a 75-61 margin against Clovis East Saturday.
“We didn’t do too badly,” Wright said. “They just pressed and pressed and pressed, and every time we made a mistake they captialized.
“They pressured us all game, and in the end our 21 turnovers hurt us.”
As did Clovis East’s 18-9 run in the third quarter, when Ripon (4-7) sank just two of 12 field-goal attempts. Ripon was able to keep pace until that point, trailing 33-29 at halftime.
The Indians did well to battle back in the fourth, but Clovis (10-3) banged in three 3-pointers on successive possessions to pull away for good.
Matt Ratto led Ripon with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Dane Wells added 10 points, while Ryan Alexander pitched in with nine points and seven rebounds.
Ripon will face a more familiar foe in Beyer of Modesto Monday at 11 a.m. to continue consolation-bracket play.
The Timberwolves (6-4) won their fourth striaght non-league contest at the Robert Dominik Fuchs Memorial Holiday Classic hosted by Columbia College, and they didn’t need their leading scorer to fill up the stat sheet.
Standout guard Christian Williams led the way with 18 points, modest by the standards he has set to start the season, while post Chris Choate chipped in with 11.
Sierra will square off with Golden Valley for the second time this preseason Monday at 4 p.m. in the round-robin tournament. The T’Wolves handed Golden Valley (10-1) its only defeat of the season, 67-51, on Dec. 10.
The struggling Lancers (0-9) were held to 10 points after three quartrers of play to open the Bear Creek Tournament Saturday.
Junior guards Tyler Bylow and Ricky Inderbitzin handled the majority of East Union’s scoring with seven points apiece.
Derrick Wofford finished with 11 to lead Stagg (7-3).
East Union will next face either Inderkum or Bear Creek Monday at 4:30 p.m.
