ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brayden Camara, East Union baseball
AOW Brayden Camara

The third-year senior infielder has busted out of his early-season hitting slump, but he’s also contributing in other facets during the Lancers’ current hot streak.

East Union (11-5) has won four straight and six of its last seven, and it has coincided with Camara’s resurgence at the plate.

After five hitless games, he’s on a five-game hitting streak in which he’s batting .571 (8 for 14) with a .667 on-base percentage.

“My dad and I talked about it,” Camara said. “I was in a pretty big slump, but I just had to relax. It came down to knowing that no one can blow it by me, and that’s been my mind set.

Last week, he hit 4 for 6 with two walks, a triple and three RBIs in non-league wins at Enochs and Gregori. He also played perfect defense at third base, coming up with four put-outs, five assists and a double play in nine chances.

Camara put glove and bat on display Monday in East Union’s Valley Oak League series opener against Sierra. He slugged his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning, then turned a 5-4 double play to end the 11-1 victory in the fifth.

“They say defense wins championships,” Camara said. “I just try to stay focused, keep the glove down and my head down and make a strong throw to first.”

On March 13, he tallied his first varsity win as a pitcher in what he said was “probably the greatest game I’ve been a part of.”

East Union trailed defending VOL co-champion Oakdale 11-2 after 4 ½ innings but came back to win, 16-13. It was the rubber game in the best-of-three series.

Camara drove in two runs, plated one and went 1 for 3 with two walks. He made his third mound appearance of the season, throwing three innings in relief while striking out two.

“I was ready,” Camara said. “Coach told me I was coming in and had three innings left, so I wanted to pitch three good innings. Luckily, the defense had my back, we got those runs to take the lead and we ended up winning.”
