ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Breanna Bragg, Manteca wrestling
AOW Breanna Bragg

The 110-pound freshman went 6-1 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Wrestling Championships on Friday and Saturday, finishing third and earning a trip to the California State Wrestling Championships beginning Thursday in Bakersfield.

Four of her wins came via pin, including a second-round pin over No. 1 seed – and fifth ranked in the state – Isabella Serrano of Pitman. The two would meet again in the consolation finals where Bragg barely prevailed 6-5.

With Bragg having apparently won 6-4, it was determined that there had been an officiating error which led to 20 seconds being put on the clock after the third period and a point being awarded to Serrano in the third-place match. The clock failed to start at the beginning of extra time, so 20 seconds was again put up, and Bragg managed to hang on for the one-point win and the bronze medal.

“I feel good about the year,” Bragg said. “I had a strong start, the middle was kind of curvy with some wins and losses and it was kind of unpredictable.

“Going into state having won my last match, I feel like I am ending my season very strong.”

According to Manteca coach Vince Bordi, Bragg has improved throughout the year and he is looking for her to get even better by Bakersfield.

“We’re not done yet but she’s gotten so much better during the year,” Bordi said. “She started off good, we got to great, and we have to get her to elite by Bakersfield.”
