ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: COLBY VEUVE, Sierra basketball
AOW Colby Veuve

Needing a win to improve their dwindling postseason hopes, the Timberwolves got a big one last Friday against rival East Union.

And Veuve left his fingerprints all over it.

The wiry senior forward came up with multiple clutch plays down the stretch, as Sierra (2-6, 13-11 overall) held on for the 55-50 victory that knocked the Lancers out of the first-place logjam in the Valley Oak League.

“This feels great,” Veuve said after the game. “We’ve been close in most of our games, and we came out and took down one of the teams in first (place).”

He racked up 14 points and nine rebounds while flirting with foul trouble for much of the second half. It was what he did in the final minute that got the T’wolves over the hump.

Veuve made five of six free throws in the final 29.1 seconds to keep East Union at bay. He also drew a fifth foul on low-post standout Lorenzo Jones on a key defensive rebound.

Veuve had one more big play left in him in the final seconds, as East Union looked to send the game in overtime. The Lancers were denied the opportunity, as Veuve stole the inbounds pass, drew another foul and put the finishing touches on his clutch performance with his final two free throws.

“Nobody was on their best guy, so I had to switch on him,” Veuve said.

It was the second game in three days against one of the top VOL teams.

The Timberwolves faced reigning co-champion Mountain House (6-2, 19-5) on Wednesday, Jam. 28 and fell short, 65-56. Veuve had 13 points and four blocks.

He averages 10.7 points and 3.6 rebounds on the season.

“Colby is a finisher,” Sierra coach Jalen Bourbon said. “It’s hard to take Colby off the court, because he does everything so well and works hard.”

Sierra’s stretch of touch games continues today at Oakdale (6-3, 21-4). The win over East Union bumped the Timberwolves up to No. 19 from 20 in the SJS Division III MaxPreps rankings. The T’wolves need to finish in the top 15 to earn an at-large berth.
