One week after establishing a new career-high single-game scoring effort, Ripon’s junior point guard beat that by a point.
He scored 34 points on an efficient 11-of-16 shooting — 2-of 4 on 3s, 10 of 10 free throws — the Indians held off Hoopa Valley 56-50 in the consolation final of the Motherlode Madness Tournament hosted at Amador.
Ripon, struggling through some early growing pains, went 3-1 in the tournament, while stringing together its first win streak of the season. Calderara earned all-tournament honors, averaging 21.8 points.
“I felt like I was just in the zone,” he said. “All the shots were falling, and I was easy looks. I was shooting mid-range pull-ups, easy catch-and-shoot 3s and getting the cup when I wanted. So, I just kept my game simple, and I think that helped me be efficient.”
Calderara was held to just seven points in 69-58 first-round loss to West Campus, though he remained active in other areas, such as seven rebounds and five assists.
In the consolation quarterfinals, he scored 24 points, while making six of nine 3-pointers. He also produced seven rebounds and five assists against Holt Academy.
Calderara went on to register 22 points on 8-of-23 shooting with 15 rebounds, five steals and five assists, as the Indians outlasted Adams Academy — El Dorado Hills, 60-66.
For the season, he’s averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals while taking on a greater role after Ripon graduated its top three scorers, including standout forward Marcus Madoski. “He’s gotten way better,” Ripon coach Dean Balcao said. “He understands how to play the varsity game. He’s worked on his game over the summer, and he probably worked harder than anybody. He was bugging me to go shoot in the gym.”
