ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Namir Brown-Sanger, Weston Ranch football
Bulletin sports fall 2021
Namir Brown-Sanger

The Cougars’ junior quarterback/linebacker had a flashback to his freshman year while flashing toward the end zone during the deciding moment of last Friday’s 26-24 win over visiting Mountain House.

Brown-Sanger dashed 84-yards on an electric touchdown run that pushed Weston Ranch (1-1) ahead 26-12 with 1:45 remaining. Things got interesting in the end as the Mustangs (0-2) struck for two unanswered touchdowns but failed to tie it on a 2-point conversion pass with no time remaining.

On the highlight-reel TD, Brown-Sanger spun away from a defender near the line of scrimmage and squirted through a crowd of Mustangs before breaking into the open field down the right sideline. He recalled a similar situation two years ago in which he came up short of the goal line and, ultimately, the victory.

“When I was in the middle of everyone I honestly thought I was going to get brought down,” he said. “When I got through, I pretty much flashed back to my freshman year when I kind of had the same thing but I got snatched down. I just ran as fast as I could.”

He had a role in all four of the Cougars’ touchdowns, rushing for three and hitting Andre Hughes from 13 yards out for the other in the fourth quarter. In all, he rushed 13 times for 177 yards while completing 4 of 8 passes for 75 yards and an interception. Defensively, he racked up four tackles and two quarterback sacks, which he credits to the other linebackers whose pressure allowed for him to make plays.

Second-year coach Ron Wayman is glad to see one of his team leaders receive accolades.

“It’s very well deserved,” Wayman said. “He’s an athlete, a scholar and above everything else, he is a fantastic young man with tons of potential.”
