BASEBALL: Murrieta pitches 1-hitter in Manteca’s VOL opener

Alex Murrieta was spotted 11 runs in the first two innings, and it was more than enough Monday in Manteca’s first Valley Oak League game of the season.

The senior ace pitched a mercy-shortened one-hitter, striking out seven and walking none as the Buffaloes thumped visiting Kimball, 12-0.

Landon Chamberlain powered the offense with a double, three RBIs and two runs, going 2 for 3. Chris Chavez also drove in three runs and had a double.

Jace Quitasol was 2 for 2 with a run. Colton Murillo and Preston Smith contributed two RBIs, and Rex Watson belted a double and scored twice.

Kimball (0-3, 2-10) welcomes the Buffaloes on Wednesday in the second of three games.

 

Oakdale 9, East Union 2

The Lancers (0-1, 6-3) struggled out the gate in their VOL opener at Oakdale (2-2, 4-6-1), which scored three runs in each of the first, third and fourth innings.

Zach Grabowski took the loss, giving up nine runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings. Blake Mount roped an RBI triple in the top of the fourth and was driven home by A.J. Vasquez.

Cade Galuppi fired 10 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings for the Mustangs.

The three-game series shifts to East Union on Wednesday.  

 

Central Catholic 2, Sierra 1

The host Raiders (3-1 VOL, 5-3 overall) prevailed in the pitcher’s duel won by Wesley Payne.

Tyler Looney went the distance for Sierra (2-1, 5-6), striking out five while surrendering nine hits and five walks.

Troy Morrow led the Timberwolves’ attack with two hits, and Jorge Guevara plated their lone run.
