The Ripon boys basketball team tipped off Trans-Valley League play Wednesday with a 19-0 run and rolled to a 73-29 victory at Hilmar. Logan Gillespie led the charge with 17 points.
The Indians (1-0, 4-11 overall) appear to be rounding into form after struggling out the gate. Two of their top players came in late from the football season, and the team trudged through a challenging schedule that included the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoop Classic.
“This is the type of win we’ve needed,” Ripon coach Justin Graham said. “We obviously had a rough start to the season and haven’t had a game like this all year. It was a great way to start league.”
Ripon was comfortably ahead 27-5 after the first quarter and 46-13 at halftime. Hilmar (0-1, 8-10) had no answer for the Indians’ post players. Six-foot-7 Bronson Burrow racked up 14 points and seven rebounds, and Nolan Young collected 13 and 11. Junior varsity call-up Jack Scholland contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
Manteca 50, Oakdale 26
The Buffaloes (1-0, 9-7) were able to combine balanced scoring, defense and rebounding to win in a rout in their first Valley Oak League game of the season.
The tone was set early, as they stampeded to a 14-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.
“(Oakdale) scored 83 points on Weston Ranch in overtime last night, so to hold them to 26 points was awesome,” Manteca coach Jason Hitt said. “As the year goes on, hopefully we become a better offensive team, but our bread and butter is defense and rebounding. We kept them off the glass.”
Trey Moreland topped all scorers with 11 points. Ryan Inderbitzin had 10, while Ramesh Kabiri and Justice Chase chipped in eight apiece.
Lathrop 65, Ceres 51
Down five players, the Spartans (1-0, 5-7), still had their way with Ceres (0-1, 7-7) in the first Western Athletic Conference contest for both teams.
Senior post Jaelin Butler helped pick up the slack with 19 points, Napoleon Reeves scored 13 and Izaias White had 10. Verlis Smith poured in 21 for Ceres.

Eli Terpsma fired 23 points, as the Knights (8-6) triumphed in their final tune-up before beginning TVL play this Friday at home against Escalon.
Thys Van Der Hoek added 12 points, and Griffin de Abreu had 10. Caleb Comfort paced Turlock Christian (11-7) with 20 points.
