BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lathrop’s Sunner sinks Sonora with 8 3s, 30 points

Unselfish play led to two explosive scoring performances for Lathrop’s girls basketball team on Tuesday.

The Spartans rode the hot hand of Sanah Sunner, who torched visiting Sonora for 30 points in a 57-45 non-league win. The senior off guard knocked down eight 3s in the process while gathering four rebounds and two steals.

Marianna Delgado went off for 20 points, five assists and three rebounds.

“We had a very good flow,” Lathrop coach Dwayne Davis said. “We are going to have three to four shooters on the floor most of the time, and when they pass and move they can get themselves some wide open shots.”

Lathrop (6-3) led 19-11 after the first quarter and widened the margin by halftime, 34-18. Taimane Lowery played a big part in keeping the ball moving, finishing with seven assists and three steals. Alaba Olaleye contributed four points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

“Marianna got us going early and was controlling the offense, and in the second and third quarters Sanah caught fire,” Davis said. “Tai kept making sure we were getting her the ball. It was a beautiful thing to see us going with the hot hand instead of saying, ‘OK, it’s my turn to shoot.’”

Defense also helped key the win. Lathrop switched to a zone to help stifle Sonora center Gracie Bearden, who finished with 16 points.

“We forced them to shoot from the outside by doubling down on their post,” Davis said. “She still got 16 points, but we made her work for everything.”
