BOYS BASKETBALL: RC, River Islands win Riverbank tourney openers

 Ripon Christian’s boys basketball team notched its first win of the season Thursday, holding off Big Valley Christian 68-55 in the first round of the Ron Peterson Tip-Off Classic at Riverbank.

The Knights (1-1) never trailed and knocked down 10 3-pointers in the process. They were led by Jake Vander Veen’s 24 points. He accounted for three of those 3s.

Ben Bulthuis hit four 3s, finishing with 13 points. Chase Bunnell and Luke Walton added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Big Valley had nine different scorers and was spearheaded by Austin Lung’s 12 points. Logan Thompson and Titus Boone chipped in 11 and 10 points.

Ripon Christian faces Beyer at 6:30 tonight in a semifinal. It’s a rematch of last year’s title game won by Beyer.


River Islands 56, Riverbank 53

The Riptide (2-1) overcame turnovers and an off-shooting night to knock off the Ron Peterson Tip-Off host. They outscored the Bruins (3-2) 15-8 in the fourth quarter for the win.

Darius Radoc Factoran led River Islands with 16 points. Charles Mapanao made the Riptide’s only two 3-pointers, while ending with 14 points. Idrees ElFaara added 12 points.

They play Downey tonight at 8 in a semifinal.


Lathrop 74, El Camino 39

The Spartans (1-1) opened the Rocklin Varsity Tip-Off with a one-sided win, getting 17 points, four rebounds and three steals from Bryan Gamboa.

Nicolas Arceo amassed 15 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Justin Neal posted 11 points, four assists and four boards.


Junior varsity

Sierra 57, Bret Harte 25

Jayden Everett fired 20 points, as the Timberwolves (4-0) cruised to the first-round victory in the Ripon Tournament.

Jack Taylor chimed in with 10 points. Sierra tangles with West tonight at 7.
