Lathrop’s boys basketball team picked up its biggest win of the season on Saturday, capturing the Dan Taylor Tip-Off Tournament championship with a 74-63 victory against previously-undefeated Colfax at Rocklin.
Tournament MVP Bryan Gamboa led the Spartans (3-1) with 27 points, draining five 3s. He also had four assists and two steals. The junior guard averaged 23.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 steals in the three tournament contests.
Sophomore Nick Arceo added 17 points in the title round, accounting for two of the team’s nine made 3s. He pulled down eight rebounds. For the tournament, he averaged 13.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 3.8 steals to earn an all-tournament selection.
Justin Neal contributed 12 points, six assists and four rebounds in the finale. Kam Bisla had eight points, six steals and four assists.

Ripon Christian 72, River Islands 56
Jake Vander Veen got Ripon Christian (2-2) going in the third-place game at Riverbank, scoring 14 of his team’s 18 points in the first quarter as the Knights opened up an 18-13 lead.
The third-year senior guard ended with a career-high 40 points on 16-of-29 shooting, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. He also accumulated seven assists and four rebounds.
Chase Bunnell contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds.
River Islands (2-3) did well stay in the game after falling behind by double digits, cutting the deficit to two, 44-42, late in the third quarter. Ripon Christian answered with a 16-5 run and didn’t look back.
Charles Mapanao drained four 3s for the Riptide, finishing with a team-high 17 points.
Joe Nava Delta King Classic
Sierra 79, Central Valley 62
After dropping their tournament opener, the Timberwolves (5-1) rediscovered their shooting stroke on the way to winning the consolation final at Stagg.
All-tourney selection Romeo Callender spearheaded four Sierra players in double figures with 16 points, making 2-of-2 3s in the process.
Riley Kane, AJ Chapman and Jordan Garcia complemented him with 10 points apiece.

Sierra 52, Weston Ranch 45
Sierra (5-1) placed third in the Ripon Tournament thanks to Jonah Patterson’s late-game takeover. He scored 10 of the Timberwolves’ 14 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 20.
Jeremiah Ybona added 11 points, and all-tourney player Jayden Everett pitched in nine.
