Six weeks of frustration has come to an end for the Manteca boys basketball team.

The Buffaloes snapped a 13-game skid in a wild finish in front of a lively home crowd on Friday, edging out rival Sierra 65-64 in overtime on Jeremiah Ordona’s buzzer-beating, put-back layup.

The junior point guard atoned for two his two missed free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining. Braydon McKenzie came down with the defensive rebound for the Timberwolves (2-8 Valley Oak League, 13-13 overall) and was fouled, but they were still one away from the bonus.

Sierra botched the opportunity to seal the win, however, turning it over on an offensive foul drawn by Ordona before the ball was inbounded from the Manteca baseline with 2.7 seconds left.

That gave the Buffaloes (1-9, 7-19) one last attempt at completing their miracle comeback — Ordona wound up with two.

Posting up deep in the key, Ordona received the inbound pass from Austin Barnes and rushed up a shot while spinning around defender Romeo Callender. The ball rimmed out but bounced right back to the alert Ordona for the dramatic put-back bucket.

“It was all (because of) my teammates, man; they picked me up when I was down,” Ordona said. “I had to draw the foul (on the inbound play) and missed (the layup), but I was able to get it back. This just feels great. Love my teammates — we’re like family, man.”

He finished with five points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Junior center Rehan Awan led Manteca with 24 points and nine rebounds. Antonio Fraley, one of three Buffaloes recognized on senior night, contributed 15 points, four rebounds and three assists. Austin Barnes added 11 points and three assists, and Madden Melendez chipped in 10 points off the bench, all coming in the second half and overtime.

Manteca battled back from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force the extra period. Awan had his own heroic put-back at the end of regulation, getting his initial shot blocked by Sierra’s Jordan Garcia before collecting the loose ball capitalizing on the second chance to tie it at 58-58 with 4.8 seconds left. Sierra was unable to get a shot off after a timeout.

“It took hustle and effort (to come back),” Awan said. “We were on a 13-game losing streak, but tonight, The Herd was with us and gave us all the energy.”

Manteca’s last win came over winter break, and it has stacked up a series of disheartening defeats since. In fact, its last outing was also decided in overtime with Patterson prevailing 63-56 on Wednesday.

Callender paced Sierra with 28 points, four steals and three assists, scoring 22 of those points in the first half. He kept the Timberwolves in the game, as Manteca raced out to an early 19-7 lead.

Sierra was hampered by foul trouble to key starters in the second half. A.J. Chapman (two points, four rebounds) and Colby Veuve (five points, 10 rebounds, seven blocks) fouled out in the fourth quarter, and Jordan Garcia (12 points, eight rebounds, two blocks) picked up his fifth infraction in overtime.

Sierra coach Jalen Bourbon, who received a technical foul late in regulation, was irked by what he felt was one-sided officiating down the stretch, but he acknowledged that his team failed to execute during multiple opportunities to put the game away.

“We turned the ball over too many times in the last two minutes (of regulation),” he said. “At that point, you just gotta take care of the ball and run time off the clock. You want to get a good shot with less than eight seconds on the shot clock, and we didn’t do that.”

Sierra’s playoff hopes likely to a major blow with this result. Last Friday, the T’wolves upset VOL championship contender East Union while improving their postseason chances. They end the regular season next week with tough match-ups against Patterson and Central Catholic. They went into the Manteca game sitting in the 19th spot of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III rankings on MaxPreps but need to end up in the top 15 for an at-large berth.

“Hopefully, there’s still a chance for us,” Bourbon said.

Manteca wraps up its season against first-place Mountain House and East Union. With most of them returning next season, the Buffaloes are looking to end the current campaign on a high note.

“It feels good to end that 13-game drought on senior night,” Awan said. “We hope to beat East Union last game of the season, and we’ll look to improve for next season.”
