Lathrop’s boys soccer team opened its season with a commanding 4-1 win at Weston Ranch on Friday despite missing eight players who are finishing commitments to their club teams.

Andres Hurtado Garcia led the Spartans with two goals and an assist, and Omar Rodriguez had three assists.

“With us being shorthanded, it shows that we have a little bit of depth,” Lathrop coach Alfredo Reynaga said. “It’s our first game, and I’m glad the boys came out and took care of business. We’re excited for the rest of the season.”

Reynaga lauded the midfield trio Manuel Solorio, Alex Jauregui and Rodriguez for their contributions in possession. Santiago Ceja and freshman Emiliano Enriquez each chipped in a goal.

Lathrop held a three-goal lead at halftime. The host Cougars scored their lone goal on a counterattack off a Lathrop corner kick.

Weston Ranch won the JV game, 7-1. Eduardo Guzman converted on a second-half penalty kick for Lathrop’s goal.
