MODESTO — In the third round of the Mark Gallo Invitational Tournament on Friday night, Manteca needed overtime to advance to today’s consolation final and Ripon Christian got off to an abysmal start to tournament host Central Catholic and never recovered in a quarterfinal tilt.

Austin Barnes scored 14 points to lead the Buffaloes (3-5) to a 51-46 overtime win against Calaveras (5-5) of San Andreas in Glynn Hall and will face either McNair or Central Valley this afternoon at 12:30 in the consolation final in the Mark Gallo Health and Fitness Center.

Manteca’s Rehan Awan added 12 points, Antonio Fraley seven and Isaiah Bravo six.

The Red Hawks’ Aaron Koepp led all scorers with 20 points and teammate Cody Wilson chipped in 11 points.

“I felt we overlooked Calaveras a little bit,” Buffaloes coach Geoff Israel said. “They are a good scrappy team that shoots the 3 and rebounds very well.

“Once the boys locked in and figured out their zone, we attacked and got buckets. Great game by both teams.”

Ripon Christian (4-3) was outscored by the Raiders (3-3) 29-13 in the opening period but managed to keep pace the rest of the way in a 63-50 Central Catholic win.

“The second half we started to play Ripon Christian basketball,” Ripon Christian coach Mark Hofman said. “The first half we did not.

“The first part of the season is over for us. We need to start playing harder and doing things right.”

Jake Vander Veen led the Knights with 18 points behind a trio of 3-pointers with five rebounds and three assists. Mason Tameling added eight points with two 3-pointers, three rebounds and two assists and Chase Bunnell chipped in seven points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

The Raiders’ Zach Ishmail led all scorers with 15 points followed by Jordan Magana with 14 points and Amari Waterford with 12.

Ripon Christian faces either Gregori or Beyer tonight at 6:30 in the third-place game in the Mark Gallo Health and Fitness Center.
