Manteca put up five runs in the fourth inning Tuesday to take an eight-run lead and held on for an 11-8 non-league softball win over visiting Tokay.
“The bats came through today,” Manteca coach Josh Farris said. “The heart of our order wasn’t there, but the other girls really stepped up. Some of our young girls were forced to play positions they were not used to and they did a great job.”
Ashley Pease had the big hit in the fifth for the Buffaloes (6-1) with a two-out two-RBI double, scoring Koryn Menasco and Allanah Harnden.
“I got up with two outs and we needed the runs,” Pease said. “I knew it didn’t have to be a home run so I didn’t swing for the fences.
“I just went for a base hit and it worked.”
In the three-run Buffaloes third, leadoff batter Kaylee MacDannald (2 for 4) laced a two-out single that scored Pease and Harnden to bump Manteca’s lead to 6-2. MacDannald plated Pease on the second with a sacrifice fly.
“On the sacrifice fly we were behind and I was looking to hit a line drive,” MacDannald said. “But the sac fly got the job done.”
Harnden walked three times and scored three runs, adding an RBI single in the big fifth inning that scored Kaileah Johannsen.
Harnden went the distance in the circle and was victimized by five Buffaloes errors, giving up five earned runs.
“I just tried to keep the ball down like my coaches teach me to do,” Harnden said. “That way we can get ground balls.”
Hitting out of the No. 9 hole, Ella Washburn was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run for Manteca.
The Tigers (1-1) scored the final five runs of the game but were not able to close the gap. Simone Medeiros, Megan Walker and Katherine Jackson all had RBI doubles for Tokay in a three-run sixth inning.
