The senior shooting guard and the rest of the Riptide are heating up at the right time.
They entered this week riding a six-game winning streak, which includes non-league opponents from the area such as defending Trans Valley League champion Ripon Christian.
Last Tuesday, Jan. 20, River Islands routed Millennium 73-36 to improve to 3-0 in the Central California Athletic Alliance. The Riptide followed that up with a 63-58 non-league win over Sierra.
Mapanao averaged 15.5 points while shooting efficiently in the two games, making 10-of-18 field goals including 8-of-15 3s. In the Sierra game, he highlighted a key 10-0 run with two 3s in the third quarter.
He established himself as a prolific 3-point shooter last season when he made 94 from behind the arc, good for fifth most in the Sac-Joaquin Section, while knocking down 43.7 percent of his attempts.
Mapanao isn’t hitting them at the same rate but remains dangerous from long range, making 56 of 147 on the season at a 38-percent clip. He leads the Riptide in scoring with 234 points, 11.1 per game.
“Charles is a tireless worker, and it’s evident with the way in which he can impact games with his shooting,” River Islands coach Justin Graham said. “While everything was a school record last year, Charles would have set a lot of schools’ 3-point records and is trending toward a career 3-point makes record that others won’t be able to catch up to.”
