Cougars beaten by buzzer-beater

WESTON RANCH — A buzzer-beating tip-in sealed the Weston Ranch sophomore basketball team’s fate Wednesday night in a 53-52 loss to Sonora.

Lorenzo Simmons had 15, and both Tau Cavil and Jesus Fuentes had 12.

“We played very well in the second half,” Cougars head coach Eddie Menzel said. “We came out flat to start the game.

Sonora started on an 11-0 run. But we started to pick it up in the second half and finished with better intensity.”

Weston Ranch (1-2 Valley Oak League, 6-7 overall) heads to East Union Friday.

Ceres 67, Manteca 59

In Ceres, the Bulldogs outscored 23-14 in the third to claim a come-from-behind win.

Eric Godfrey poured in 17 for the Buffaloes and Matt Burrows had 11.

Manteca (3-1 VOL, 11-3 overall) travels to Sierra Friday.

Central Valley 59, East Union 50

The Hawks built a 37-25 halftime lead and wouldn’t relinquish it.

TeeJay Gordon dropped 17, and Juan Baraan had 12.

EU (1-2 VOL, 6-7 overall) hosts Weston Ranch Friday.

Oakdale 56, Sierra 42

Grant Widmer had 15, and Edy Guzman had 10 in the loss.

“We came out flat,” Sierra head coach Justin Muschott said. “ We can’t do that against a good team like Oakdale.

“Grant did an outstanding job tonight.”

Sierra (2-2 VOL, 5-8 overall) hosts Manteca Friday.

Freshman
East Union 47, Central Valley 23

The Lancers stormed out to a 30-8 first-half lead and cruised the rest of the way.

Brandon Cline had 12 and eight rebounds, while Zac Carillo contributed 10 points.

Brock Swift had seven points and seven boards.

EU (3-0 VOL, 10-2 overall) welcomes Weston Ranch Friday.

Weston Ranch 40, Sonora 24

Will Cavil led the way with 12, while both Atlante Lockett and Daniel Nelson had eight.

The Cougars (3-0 VOL, 6-3 overall) visit East Union Friday afternoon.

Oakdale 49, Sierra 43

In Oakdale, Jojo Berry had 12, Bret Wilson nine and Tim Thornton eight, but it wouldn’t be enough in the close loss.

Sierra (1-3 VOL, 4-9 overall) hosts Manteca Friday.

Manteca 51, Ceres 34

Tim Baker, Kenny Gaines and Stanley Walker all had 10 as Manteca enjoyed balanced scoring in the blowout win.

Alex Martinez (7 points) played an outstanding floor game.

Manteca (3-1 VOL, 10-5 overall) visits Sierra Friday night.
