Weston Ranch’s baseball team ended its season with an 11-1 mercy-shortened loss at Sonora Tuesday.

Cristian Vazquez knocked in Tyler Scharnow for Weston Ranch’s lone run in the first inning, but Sonora pitcher Karson Canaday handcuffed the Cougars (2-12 Valley Oak League, 5-17 overall) the rest of the way.

Canaday and reliever Nolan Dambacher combined for a five-inning one-hitter.

“Canaday pitched a great game,” Weston Ranch coach Ron Wayman said. “We started the game the way we wanted to, but we were just plagued by mistakes.”

Sonora (9-5, 17-9), which clinched the VOL’s No. 2 seed for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs, plated two unearned runs and erupted for seven more in the third to break it open.

Scharnow pitched his final game for the Cougars Tuesday. The standout pitcher struck out five, walked five and scattered five hits and was done in by a poor defensive effort behind him.

“Tyler had a heck of a season for us,” Wayman said. “It was not the season I wanted. Going in I had high expectations of this team. We had a great bunch of young men and athletes, and the good thing is that eight of our 10 returners for next year are starters.”
