The Lathrop softball team is in uncharted territory.
For the first time in Spartans coach Stephanie Maestretti tenure Lathrop finds itself 2-0 thanks to a 12-2 five-inning mercy-rule win over visiting McNair on Monday at Big League Dreams.
“I have been here for five years,” Maestretti said. “And in that time this is our first 2-0 start. This feels pretty good.
“I wish we had wins against someone besides McNair, but I will take the two wins, and the two mercy wins are even better.”
Maci De Costa was dynamite at the plate and in the circle for the Spartans (2-0), going 4 for 4 with five RBI two double and two runs while striking out 12 with four hits.
“I felt great pitching today,” De Costa said. “Luz De Luna did a great job catching.
“Hitting-wise, I was glad I could come up and shell out for my team today.”
De Costa’s battery mate De Luna also reached base four times, going 3 for 3 with an RBI, two doubles, two runs and a walk.
“It was a pretty good game,” De Luna said. “I have a great pitcher who was following all my pitch calls.”
Lathrop totaled six doubles with Kendall Stewart (2 for 3, double, run) and Tatianna Lopez (RBI, runs) adding a double apiece. Heiddy Camacho went 2 for 3 for the Spartans.
Lathrop’s big inning was the first when the first six Spartans batters reached base and scored, highlighted by a two-RBI double by De Costa, an RBI double by Lopez with RBI singles by De Luna and Stewart.
Naohmi Tapia had the big hit for the Eagles (1-3) from Stockton with a two-out triple in the third inning that she ended up scoring on when the relay from the outfield was misplayed.
