With seven minutes left in the game Tuesday night East Union’s Jenna Campbell, salvaged a tie with Ripon on a 30-yard shot from the wing to the opposite corner of the net to knot the score at 2-2, which proved to be the final in non-league girls soccer action on the soccer fields at River Islands.
“I was hoping for it,” Campbell said. “We didn’t have much time left and I was trying to get one in.
“I cut to my right and I didn’t have it, so I cut to my left and I had it so I just went for it.”
Dani Rey got the Indians (3-3-2) on board barely three minutes into the game when she powered a rebound back into the net for a 1-0 Ripon lead.
“This whole pre-season we have been struggling with starting off slow, starting off flat,” Silva said. “Tonight, our main thing was to not start off slow, not start off flat, but to start off quick, and the next thing you know they put a goal in quickly. Thirty seconds after that we counter attack with a shot at the keeper and a minute later the same thing and then the flow of the game kind of slowed down.
“I’m happy where we’re at. We just need to keep moving forward. We are playing some tough games with having just played Gregori, and Pitman and Lincoln is coming up. We need to stay focused and get ready for league.”
Devon Denhart was filling in for Indians coach Bryce Perkins and Ripon experimented with a new formation.
“This is our first game trying a new formation,” Denhart said. “We did a really good jo,b and we were working on our shape. That’s exactly what we did.
“I think our girls did a really well talking, communicating and moving the ball.”
Indians goalie Ellena Parenti-Gomez was injured early in the game but played out the contest.
“Our goalie is phenomenal,” Denhart said. “She goes for everything.
“Even though she was in pain, she is great to have back there. Her shoulder is really bothering her but she stuck through it. She is really tough.”
Parenti-Gomez was kept busy, snagging 12 saves.
“We were trying a new formation today,” Parenti-Gomez said. “We have been trying to move around and figure out our positions as a team.
“It is definitely looking better now.”
In the 53rd minute Rey dished Olivia Maragos who found the net to put Ripon ahead 2-1. Immediately following Campbell’s game-tying goal Rey nearly put the Indians ahead when her shot caromed off East Union goalie Genesis Rodriguez and skirted the length of the goal before bouncing off the far cross bar.
“I was leaning back on that last shot,” Rey said. “I didn’t really get as much power as I could have. It was very close.
“I think that the formation we are playing helps us work better as a team. We are more open with more space to dribble.”
Chloe Silva got the Lancers (4-4-1) on the board in 27th minute when she scored on a breakaway to knot the score at 1-1.
East Union outshot Ripon 19-10 with 14 shots on goal for the Lancers to seven for the Indians. Rodriguez made five saves.
