East Union High varsity boys soccer squad maintained its first-place hold Wednesday in the Valley Oak League by blanking Sonora, 3-0.

Eduardo Hernandez scored twice and Dante Pasquini’s corner kick accounted for the first-half scoring load.

Goalie Dominic Riella preserved the shutout, getting help from his teammates.

The Lancers (5-1, 7-3-2) relied on their passing while constantly moving the ball wide.

“Our plan was to spread the field against Sonora,” said East Union coach Allen Green.

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Lancers rotated players throughout the second half.

East Union will take on second-place Manteca High on Monday.

In another VOL game, Weston Ranch was ahead of Kimball. No score was available.

Sierra 4, Lathrop 2
The Timberwolves (4-1-1) kept pace with the VOL frontrunners by handling the rival Spartans.

Amir Guedoir, Aaron Montes, Joe Acosta and Nicholas Gonzalez had a goal each for Sierra.

Lathrop (1-5) kept pace with a first-half goal by Uriel Ramos and a breakaway score by Marshall Marin, who was assisted by Sergio Lopez.

“We fought hard against Sierra,” said Spartan coach Ryan Biedermann.

Sierra coach Jose Montes was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I thought we played pretty good despite missing a few players,” he said.

On Monday, Sierra will square off against Weston Ranch while Lathrop will battle Kimball.

Daniel Gonzalez, Ivan Abarca and Hector Mejia were among the defensive standouts for the Cougars.

The Lancers remained unbeaten in VOL thanks to a lopsided victory at Sonora.
