East Union’s sophomore boys basketball team held off Weston Ranch 54-48 in the first round of the Block M Tournament hosted by Manteca High.
Weston Ranch was able to in the game via the free-throw line, where it shot 24 for 38. The Squires converted 12 of 21 from the stripe.
Lucas Garcia sparked EU with 15 points, and Nisar Fazli chipped in 10. East Union squares off with the winner of the Ripon-Manteca game tonight.
Sophomore girls
Riverbank 43, Sierra 31
Despite missing 16 free throws and turning the ball over 34 times, Sierra still had a chance at the end down by six points with a minute to go.
Marissa LaQualgia posted eight points and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves. Kristen Maestretti finished with six points and eight rebounds. Keanna Barber had five points and six assists.
Ripon 49, Oakdale 24
Karisa Carlson poured in 16 points as the Indians advance to the semifinal round of their 3rd Annual Ripon High Tournament. They play Tracy at 8 tonight.
Freshman boys
East Union 56, Weston Ranch 54
The Pages (6-2) got 21 points from Kevin Jacobson while staving off a fourth-quarter charge from Weston Ranch.
Daniel Ramos added 14 points for EU, and Austin Miller contributed nine.
Freshman girls
Sierra 56, Riverbank 37
Kendelle Messersmith recorded 14 points and five steals as the Timberwolves capped their nonleague record at 8-2. Devi Coglio chimed in with 14 points and five steals, and Trayana Davis had nine points.
