MODESTO — Oakdale and Central Catholic did not leave a lot of room for the rest of the schools in the final-round matches of the Valley Oak League boys wrestling tournament Friday at Mark Gallo Health and Fitness Center.

Oakdale covered all 14 weight classes, while host Central Catholic 11 finalists. Three from Manteca Unified schools were able to compete for first place.

In the girls competition, Manteca tallied three first-place medals and Sierra one with the top four advancing to the two-day Central Regional CIF championships at Tokay High in Lodi beginning next Friday.

Sierra’s Luis Gonzalez battled Oakdale’s Jake Simmons and was pinned in the first period of the 128-pound boys final.

“I feel pretty good,” Gonzalez said. “I know I could have done better. I tied doing a duck under and got sloppy with it and he just caught me”.

Sierra’s Douglas Tipton was pinned by Oakdale’s Xander Birakos in the opening round of the 192-pound final.

“This is my second year wrestling,” Tipton said. “I am excited to grow and look at this as a learning opportunity. I am proud of how far I came this year.”

At 215 pounds, Manteca’s Michael Smith ran into Oakdale buzzsaw Wes Burford and was pinned in the first round.

“The year is going good,” Smith said. “I am just wrestling my game. This is just part of wrestling.”

Wrestlers who finished in the top four will advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Championships next Saturday at River City High School in Sacramento.

Finishing third from Manteca were Owen Barringer (108), Rudra Singh (152), and James Ripley (192) with Brandon Nakham (128), Dennan Loureiro (167) and Lorenzo Sereno (287) finishing fourth. Jacob Soares (217) finished third for Sierra and Jonathan-Tyler Morimoto (108), Kendrick Gutierrez (122), Tristan Brasil (134) and Christian Anaya (152) were fourth.

Erick Cortez (177) was third for East Union and Jack Heidrich (159) fourth.

In the 107-pound girls final, Manteca’s Nalani Rico pinned Mountain House’s Arriana James in the second period for the gold medal.

“This happened because of good coaches like (Vince) Bordi,” Rico said. “He is the best coach out there and it wouldn’t be possible without him.”

Buffaloes Teammate Alisha James (117) pinned East Union’s Molly Diaz in the first round for first place.

“I wanted to shoot and be aggressive right off the whistle,” James said. “I wrestled her before so I know how she wrestles. I got the arm bar and was good to go.”

Sierra’s Valeria Galvan (192) tallied a first-round pin over Patterson’s Camila Guerrero-Ruiz for the gold medal.

“It feels awesome,” Galvan said. “It is getting toward the end of the season and I am just happy all the work I have put in is paying off.”

Also finishing first was Manteca’s Kirra Hendricks (137) in a third-round pin over Oakdale’s Gabriella Fry.

Brenna Bragg (112) and Susan Joseph (127) were second for Manteca, Rupreet Dheraj (132) and Sophia Cruz (142) third and Zaniyah McClendon (192) fourth. For Sierra, Halo Neufville (132) and Joselle Go (142) finished second with Daena Vanderwilt (112) and Valeria Lozoya (157) finishing fourth. East Union’s Second Katelyn Partney (172) was second and Hailey Lopez (107) third.
