Lathrop used a 30-2 second period to break open its non-league girls basketball game with visiting River Islands on Tuesday and went on to roll to a 66-15 win.
“I’m happy,” Spartans coach Dwayne Davis said. “We got to play a lot of players, but I am most happy with the play of our freshmen and that they understand a lot.
“So, we are not having to teach as much of the small stuff, because they get it, and I like this group of kids. There are no rivalries, they push each other and they are playing hard with each other. I really like this group.”
One of the freshmen for Lathrop (3-0) is Breanna Wiseman, who scored 15 points along with three blocks and two rebounds.
“Even though I am a freshman, I think I played all right for being a freshman,” Wiseman said. “I feel good about playing with the varsity, and I think we have good communication.”
Audrina Fisher added 11 points with three blocks and three rebounds, while Shakara Porter chipped in nine points, two blocks and two rebounds.
“I feel I had more confidence than I did the last game,” Fisher said. “We did good communicating, setting up plays and boxing out.”
Jayleah Seabron added seven points for the Spartans, Madilynn Nungary six while Faith Butler scored four points in the final two minutes of the game and Belinda Renteria added three points and four rebounds in the fourth period.
Brianna Lee paced River Islands (1-1) with seven points – all scored in the first quarter – with Lee, Octavia Orndoff and Zariah Oliver anchoring the Riptide defense.
“I am actually really proud of our defense,” River Islands coach Jessica Hutton said. “I realize the score doesn’t really show that, but we executed on some things I wanted them to execute on, but we still need to continue working on offense.
“This was definitely a learning opportunity for us, and it really exposed some things we need to work on going forward.”
On Thursday, Lathrop hosts Downey of Modesto at 5:30 p.m., and River Islands hosts Enochs of Modesto at 6:30 p.m.
