The Lathrop girls basketball team showed its depth and versatility in a 50-36 season-opening victory at Manteca on Friday.

Freshman Breanna Wiseman led the Spartans with 17 points, six rebounds, four steals and three blocks, but it’s the contributions of many that has longtime coach Dwayne Davis excited for the new year.

“They (Manteca) were big in the interior, but we can match up with other teams’ size this year,” he said. “We like our group. We’re very versatile for different matchups.”

Manteca made two early 3-pointers but struggled to get good looks the rest of the way, because of Lathrop’s length and activity, leading to 17 turnovers. The Spartans comfortably led at halftime, 28-15.

Veteran upperclassmen Shakara Porter (seven points, four rebounds two steals) and Jaleiyah Ray (six points, three rebounds four steals) were among the main contributors, along with freshmen Jaylah Seabron (seven points, four steals, three rebounds) and Aisha Wiseman (nine points, two rebounds, steal).

Lathrop next takes on Kimball on the road on Tuesday.

The offenses came alive in the fourth quarter at Dalben Center.

Ava Barrera knocked down two 3s and scored eight of her 10 points in the final period, and Julianna Gaspar scored all of her five points in crunch time. Shebra Rezaye helped keep the Lancers afloat at the outset, accounting for 10 of her team’s 14 points in the first half. Zyondupree Beasley contributed nine points.

The game was nip-and-tuck from start to finish, as it was tied at the end of each of the first three quarters.
