It was obvious that Sierra’s 54-21 shellacking of visiting Edison of Stockton was the season’s first game for both teams. There were 63 combined turnovers, 44 total fouls and the two teams combined to go 19 of 53 from the foul line.
In a word, sloppy.
“It was a first game,” Timberwolves coach Larissa Founts-Bergerson said. “That’s what we’re going to chalk it up as.
“We now have to get out the kinks and get ready to go against Riverbank on Wednesday.”
Sierra’s defense forced 40 turnovers with Raiann Prieto (eight rebounds) getting six steals and Nat Dias (10 points, eight rebounds) nabbing five steals. Lex McBride (two rebounds, block) and Jordan Hayter (three rebounds, two assists) had four steals each and Perla Valdovinos (six rebounds) and Bre Gavino tallied three steals each. Sierra (1-0) totaled 30 steals.
“With my team defending as well as we did, when I see the ball I just go for it,” Dias said. “I know I can gamble a little bit and they will have my back.”
Dulce Cruz (seven rebounds, steal) chipped in 10 points for the Timberwolves and Inessa Villanueva (three rebounds, two assists, steal, block) led all scorers with 13 points.
“When you miss, you have to be able to keep shooting,” Villanueva said. “You can’t stop and lose confidence.
“Keeping my confidence in my shot really helped.”
The Delta Queens (0-1) won the battle of the boards 49-43 with Cheyanne Gaines grabbing 20 rebounds with 10 coming off the offensive glass. Stagg totaled 19 offensive rebounds, but between its abysmal (7 of 29) free-throw shooting and 40 turnovers, the stellar effort off the glass was wasted.
