Ripon will get a chance to end its streak of semifinal ousters, but it took the dramatic route to get back there.
Freshman Claire Rietkerk scored twice in regulation and assisted the go-ahead goal in the second of two periods of extra time, as the No. 4 Indians outlasted No. 5 Placer 4-2 on Monday at Wes Stouffer Field.
The Indians (21-5-1) had more than enough of the possession and chance creation to have taken care of Placer (9-8-4) in 80 minutes. They outshot the Hillmen, 30-6.
“It was a really lopsided contest,” Ripon coach Bryce Perkins said. “We controlled the game and the pitch and dictated the terms. It was just one of those deals where they got a couple fluky goals and it turned into a nail biter.”
Ripon appeared to have it hand after Rietkerk scored in the 20th and 44th minutes on assists from Olivia Ellis. After it was held without a shot in the first half, Placer answered on its first two attempts in the 47th and 54th minutes.
Mia Hendryx scored the go-ahead goal 4 minutes into the second overtime, and Ellis finished a feed from Taylen Dayak in the 98th minute.
Goalie Giuliana Locarnini had three saves.
Ripon will next travel to top-seeded Oakdale (19-2-2) on Wednesday. The Valley Oak League champion Mustangs also had a surprisingly close call — they needed overtime to get by rival Central Catholic, the ninth seed, by the same score, 4-2.
The Indians have lost three consecutive semifinals in as many years. They last advanced to the championship in 2020, one year after claiming the Division V title.

Rocklin 4, Manteca 0
The seventh-seeded Buffaloes (18-6-4) could not get untracked against the defending champion Thunder (14-4-1), the No. 2 seed and runner-up of the competitive Sierra Foothill League.
There were two surprising results in the quarterfinal round, both involving Tri-City Athletic League squads. No. 9 Rio Americano knocked off top-seeded Tracy 2-0, while No. 6 Woodcreek edged St. Mary’s, 1-0. Rocklin will host Woodcreek on Wednesday.
Division VI
Ripon Christian 7, Millennium 0
Top-seeded Ripon Christian (15-7-1) showed no signs of rust following a first-round bye, taking care of business against the Central California Athletic Alliance champion.
Brooke Barnes netted four goals for the Knights, while freshman Raegan Burgess added a goal and an assist. Paige Van Hofwegen assisted Barnes’ two second-half goals.
Morgan Schenk had three saves in the shutout of the Falcons (16-7-2).
Freshman Caitlin Walton put away the first goal of the game in the 25th minute. Krista Koolhaas scored on a second-half penalty kick. Emi Sanders, promoted from the JV squad, contributed the assist on the final goal of the game scored by Burgess.
Fifth-seeded Vacaville Christian (11-4-3) visits Ripon Christian for a semifinal Wednesday.
