Blake Greenlee hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the third quarter Monday to break open a tie game and give the Lancers a cushion in a 68-58 win over visiting Inderkum of Sacramento in boys non-league basketball action.
“Both teams were having troubles scoring and those two shots of his kind of gave us a shot in the arm,” East Union coach Ryan Tarr said.
Greenlee led all scorers with 25 points behind four 3-pointers, hitting three from behind the arc in the third quarter.
“It was nice finally finding a rhythm,” Greenlee said. “I missed a few in the beginning but I finally got to knock some down to get the lead.”
With the Lancers (3-6) leading 35-28 after three quarters, East Union nearly doubled its output in the final quarter with 33 points while the Tigers (1-4) did double their score with 30.
Free throws were key for the Lancers in the fourth quarter with East Union hitting 15 of 19 in the final period.
“We did a good job of making free throws in the fourth quarter,” Tarr said. “Along with a few easy buckets that helped us keep the lead.
“Drew (Sena) did a great job of handling the press. They pressured him a lot and he was phenomenal. His play was very valuable tonight.”
Sena (16 points) and Jojo Espinosa (11 points) were each 5 of 6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and Greenlee was 4 for 5.
The Lancers led 21-16 at halftime and saw Inderkum rally to tie the game at 24 in the third quarter when Greenlee hit the first of his back-to-back 3 pointers and East Union never looked back.
“The third quarter is usually our worse quarter,” Sena said. “We knew they were going to come out physical and we were going to have to come out strong.
“We did and we got the ‘W.’”
