Running back Jarrod Daniels set program records and helped Sierra High’s football team make history this past 2009 season.
History was made yet again during the coaches meeting at Sonora Elks Lodge in Sonora Monday.
Daniels was voted the Valley Oak League’s Most Valuable Player and is the first player in program history to earn that distinction for football.
Teammate Anthony Hall was named co-Outstanding Offensive Player along with Manteca running back Marquis Miller, and Jeff Harbison is Coach of the Year for the second straight year. Talented junior lineman Nate Gray is conference’s Outstanding Defensive Player.
Co-champions Sierra (6-1, 11-2 overall) and Oakdale (6-1, 11-2) had their seasons end in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs semifinals on Dec. 4. Sonora (5-2, 10-3) was eliminated in the Division IV-A semifinal, and Manteca (5-2, 7-4) in the first round of D-III.
Harbison guided Sierra to its best single-season finish.
“Although a few players won awards, it was a team accomplishment,” said Harbison, who shares Coach of the Year honors with first-year Sonora head coach Brain Craig. “Tonight, the coaches rewarded truly-deserving players across the league.
“Jarrod was our go-to guy on the ground, and Anthony made great contributions both receiving and kicking.”
Daniels, who also played heavy minutes in the defensive backfield depending matchups, is Sierra’s new single-season and career record holder in rushing yards and touchdowns. He capped a superb senior campaign with 1,813 overall yards and 32 touchdowns.
Hall was arguably the area’s top all-around producer. He caught 52 passes for 715 yards and nine touchdowns and converted eight field goals — including 50-, 45- and 40-yarders that keyed Sierra’s first-ever win over Oakdale, 44-42. He also returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown in that game and was named to the all-VOL first-team defense.
Miller pounded out 1,572 yards and 22 touchdowns for Manteca. Fellow Buffalo and special-teams standout Bradley Hatfield joins Hall as the only other area athlete to earn a spot on both the offensive and defensive teams as the first-team kicker and second-team punter.
Manteca and Sierra are well-represented on the first team.
Earning first-team recognition for Manteca are: offensive lineman Jeff Collins, wide receiver Reggie Bell (31 receptions, 444 yards, three TDs), defensive lineman Richie Lopez (37 tackles, five sacks, two fumble recoveries) and inside linebacker Adam DeCosta (77 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles).
First-team members from Sierra include: offensive lineman Alex Trujillo, quarterback Jonathan Davis (86-of-138 passing, 1,235 yards, 14 TDs, three picks; 352 rushing yards, three TDs), inside linebacker T.J. Sataua (69 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions) and outside linebacker John Perez (62 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles).
