SALIDA — The Ripon High Indians had a tough time Thursday containing Modesto Christian’s Carsyn Hoogendoorn.

The forward for the Crusaders scored the tying goal prior to the intermission of the Trans-Valley League clash, then punched the game-winner about 10 minutes into the second half as the Crusaders won 2-1 to knock off the reigning champions.

Ripon took a 1-0 in the 20th minute, with Cindy Alvarez scoring a shot set up by Aliana Alvarez.

“We played well but they had more (scoring) opportunities,” said Indians coach Jamie De Bruyn.

His goalie Courtney Slamon had three saves in the loss. Ripon had a four-match winning streak snapped while giving up its first goals in two weeks.

Ripon will look to bounce back on April 5 when visiting Hilmar (2-0, 3-2) visits.
