Down to visiting Lincoln by 11 points midway through the third period Friday night, East Union battled back to take a four-point lead near the start of the final quarter.
Due in part to two Lancers turnovers down the stretch, along with a pair of missed free throws, the Trojans were able to force overtime and ran away with the extra period in a 75-65 Lincoln win at Dalben Center in non-league girls basketball action.
“We were down double digits and came back against a good, quality team — Division I ranked No. 4 (in the Sac-Joaquin Section),” East Union coach Jim Agostini said. “We’re not here for moral victories and we want to win, and I thought that my team competed their tails off.
“I told our girls tonight they did a great job and took a nice, big stride forward. Even though it was a loss, and I’m not happy we lost, but I’m happy the way we competed and got ourselves back in the game. We were just a couple of shots away from walking out of here really happy.”
Lincoln (7-3) of Stockton was nails from long range, hitting four 3-pointers in the first quarter alone and eight overall with two coming in overtime.
“We are learning how to play better basketball,” Trojans coach Christopher Roemer said. “And we need to grow and become stronger as a team.
“Jim (Agostini) does a great job with his girls, and that (Ava) Barrera kid is a real competitor.”
Zyodupree Beasley flirted with a triple-double to lead the Lancers (8-3) with 17 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Barrera was close behind with 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals, Kymoni Beasley added 12 points and Jerney Luckett 11 points and five rebounds.
Lincoln’s Terrazia Smith led all scorers with 32 points including a pair of 3-pointers. Brooklyn Cooks added 13 points behind three 3-pointers.
East Union travels to Tracy to take on West on Monday afternoon at 2:30.
