Manteca High’s boys basketball team stretched its first-place lead while clinching its second straight Valley Oak League championship by beating second-place Sierra 66-49 Friday, but that did not improve its position on the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff power ratings.
The Buffaloes (13-1, 20-5 overall) actually dropped from the fifth spot to sixth according to the section’s last of three updates of the power ratings released Tuesday. Rio Americano leapfrogged Manteca with two wins in the Capital Athletic League last week.
The section uses a formula that factors non-league and league strength and records, and opponents’ winning percentage to come up with the ratings.
The top 16 rated teams in each of the five divisions qualify for the playoffs. The latest release includes games played through Saturday.
East Union’s girls, who claimed their fourth straight VOL championship last week, remains at No. 6, while Ripon Christian’s boys are the area’s top-rated team with a two-spot jump to No. 2 in Division V.
With titles already settled in the VOL and Trans Valley League, the races for playoff berths will hit their crescendo as the regular season wraps up this week.
The Sierra boys team wasn’t hurt too badly from the loss to Manteca, falling from No. 13 to 14 after having won its previous six contests. Sixteenth-seeded Weston Ranch hosts Sierra Friday for what is likely a do-or-die showdown for both teams.
Four VOL girls teams are in the hunt: No. 11 Oakdale, No. 13, Manteca, No. 15 Sonora and No. 18 Weston Ranch. Oakdale played Weston Ranch on the road while Manteca hosted Sonora Tuesday. Oakdale heads to Sonora Thursday, while Manteca faces East Union.
Rivals Ripon and Ripon Christian met Tuesday. Ripon’s boys are No. 12 in Division IV with a big matchup against No. 16 Escalon looming Friday. Ripon Christian closes out league play with heavily-favored Modesto Christian, No. 3 in Division IV, but is solidly entrenched with a Division-V postseason berth regardless of how the Knights fare this week.
Ripon’s girls are No. 10, and Ripon Christian No. 11 in Division V.
