Manteca’s season ends with competitive loss to top seed Rio Americano

Hailie Kim’s remarkable freshman season has come to an end, but two days sooner than she had hoped.

That’s because Manteca’s bid for a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinal upset of top-seeded Rio Americano came up short Monday at Gold River Racquet Club, 5-4.

The Raiders (15-3) of Sacramento will meet No 2. Placer — a 6-3 winner over No. 3 Christian Brothers — in the title round Wednesday at the University of the Pacific’s Zimmerman Tennis Complex.

With Kim and fourth-year senior Shreya Raman leading the charge at the top of the ladder, the fourth-seeded Buffaloes (15-7-1) did enough in singles play to have a shot, but Rio’s depth won the day.

Kim, who captured the SJS Division II Individual Tournament singles championship last Friday, blanked Jenny Yin 6-0, 6-0 to complete her perfect season with a 25-0 record. She also had a doubles win during a midseason tournament in Fresno.

Raman goes out with a bang, also prevailing with a 6-0, 6-0 score against Tori White in the No. 2 match. The No. 4 singles match was the only one decided in a third set; Manteca’s Paisley Coenenberg came through for the 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 triumph over freshman Natalia Cohen.

Rae Limbago, one of four freshman singles players for Manteca, won the No. 5 contest against Kaia Planting, 6-2, 6-2.

Katy Morley (6-3, 6-2) and Halle Staropoli (6-0, 6-1) defeated freshman siblings Saihaj and Ekam Ghuman at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, respectively.

In doubles, Rio Americano’s all-senior tandem of Charlotte Thomas and Amanda Tran shut out Ryan Gomes and Natalia Perez, 6-0, 6-0. Kelsey Peeler and Natalie Tran took care of Alyson Alvarado and Delialah Sanchez Torres, 6-1, 6-2. The third doubles match was won by Linnea Bohan and Ella Parsons 6-1, 6-3 over Prabhjot Saran and Zoey Pratt.

The Division III final will run simultaneous to the Division IV matchup starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Stockton.  Division I and II matches will follow at 1 p.m. Valley Oak League champion Mountain House is vying for the Division I title with Oak Ridge.
