Mapanao earns CCAA MVP in River Islands’ milestone winter season

 Charles Mapanao has set the standard for perimeter shooting at River Islands.

One of the most prolific 3-pointer shooters in the Sac-Joaquin Section the past two seasons, Mapanao part of a milestone winter sports season for his fledgling school. The senior guard led the Riptide boys basketball team to its first league title in the Central California Athletic Alliance, earning MVP honors in the process.

In addition, the girls basketball and boys soccer teams made their first postseason appearances, while the girls soccer team qualified for a second time with sophomore midfielder Cierra Torres named as All-CCAA Most Outstanding Player.

River Islands is in its second year with varsity sports and first with a senior class.

Mapanao finished with the 10th-most 3-point field goals made in the section this past season, hitting on 86 of his 217 attempts (40%). He ranked No. 5 as a junior, and his 180 makes from beyond the arc stands as the school’s varsity record.

In eight league games, Mapanao paced the Riptide (8-0 CCAA, 17-12 overall) with 11.8 points per game. Senior point guard Idrees ElFarra is one of three River Islands athletes to repeat as first-team selections. He averaged 8.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.2 steals in CCAA action.

Junior forward Darius Radoc Factoran (10.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.6 steals, 1.8 blocks) was named to the second team. Zachary Basurto, Euan Costales and Dylan Peter earned honorable mention.

Torres received all-league first-team honors as a freshman and put together another productive season for the girls soccer team, which placed third in the CCAA at 11-3 while finishing 12-3-1 overall. Her 18 assists is 15th most in the SJS, and she netted 14 goals and 17 assists in 13 league games. River Islands’ final regular-season match was forfeited by Vanguard College Prep.

Joining Torres on the All-CCAA first team are freshman forward Violeta Castillo (17 goals, seven assists), freshman striker Serena Mendoza (14 goals, 11 assists) and senior defender Ashley Rodriguez (three goals, three assists). Angelina Trigos made honorable mention.

The boys soccer team (9-4-1, 10-9-3) rallied late in the regular season to earn an automatic playoff berth.

Senior center back Yovany Avila is a second-time first-team selection. Sophomore attacking midfielder Jaiden Reynoso also made the first team, as did freshmen Noah Castillo and Akai Henderson.

Seniors Veronica Erilim (9.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals) and Brianna Lee (7.0 points, 2.6 assists, 4.1 steals) received second-team recognition for girls basketball (6-4, 10-18). Octavia Orndoff got honorable mention.
