Miller strikes twice in Buffs VOL opener

OAKDALE — Manteca had trouble finishing shots but did more than enough to topple Oakdale 4-1 in its first Valley Oak League contest Thursday.

The Buffaloes (1-0-0, 9-3-0) are riding a four-game winning streak since losing to Tracy via penalty kick shootout in the title round of the Buff Cup.

“We had opportunities early,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said. “It could have been 4-0 in the first 10 minutes, but they’re a much-improved team from last year, especially in the midfield. They made things difficult for us in the middle, but once we got into the offensive third we were able to get some nice opportunities.”

Sophomore Kaley Miller scored both of Manteca’s second-half goals. Madison Burch and Jordyn Silva gave the Buffs a 2-0 halftime lead with Alexa Mayen chipping in an assist. Aimee Meyer recorded nine saves and allowed Oakdale’s lone goal in the final minute.

“It seems like Oakdale (0-0-1, 4-3-0) teams play better at home, so to go on the road and get that first win in league is a good thing,” Coenenberg said.
