LATHROP — East Union High’s sophomore softball team took control early on, leading by five runs after two innings en route to an 11-1 victory over Lathrop in its first Valley Oak League contest of the season Wednesday.

Natalie Large (three innings), Jill Costa (two innings) and Jenny Ketner (two innings) combined for nine strikeouts and a two-hitter.

Briana Lopez roped both of Lathrop’s hits, and Dalia Medina plated the team’s lone run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.

“We just played good, solid defense, had key hits and good pitching — that combination helps shut down the other side,” EU coach Ron Kackley said. “But Lathrop was a scrappy team. They battled.”

Kailee Nuding powered the Squires (1-0, 4-4 overall) with a solo home run and finished 2 for 3 at the plate. Ashley Cook plated three runs and went 2 for 4, and Ketner added three hits and two runs in her four at-bats.
