East Union’s up-and-coming boys tennis team completed its Valley Oak League regular season with a 9-0 win over rebuilding Manteca on Tuesday at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.
The Lancers (6-6, 8-8 overall) are hoping to earn an at-large berth to the Sac-Joaquin Section team playoffs after placing fourth in the VOL. It’s a big improvement from consecutive last-place finishes recent years.
East Union celebrated its lone senior, who manned the No. 1 singles spot. He knocked off, Isaiah DeVega 6-0, 6-1.
The undermanned Buffaloes forfeited the rest of the singles matches. A perennial contender in the last decade-plus, Manteca is rebuilding after losing 10 seniors last year with just two players returning. The Buffs lost a player to a season-ending injury and have had eight-man lineups in most dual matches.
All three doubles contests ended 6-0, 6-0 and favored the Lancers.
Getting the wins for East Union were No. 1 Andrew Delgado/Anh Tran, No. 2 Jithin Joy/Martin Kalladanthyil and No. 3 Camden Collier/Curtis Hansen.
Manteca caps its dual schedule at undefeated Mountain House on Thursday. After that is the VOL singles and doubles tournaments set for April 21 and 23 at Sierra High.
Tokay 7, Sierra 2
Sierra (8-6) tuned up for some big matches again with the non-league tilt in Lodi, where the T’wolves took on the top team out of the San Joaquin Athletic Association.
They got their two wins in singles, as No. 4 Noah Brum swept Max Hernandez 6-2, 6-4, while No. 6 Johan Arroyo eked past Jordan Abellera 6-7(4), 6-1, 10-3.
Sierra next hosts Oakdale on April 14 in a battle for second place and postseason positioning in the VOL.
Lathrop 8, Johansen 1
The Spartans took care of business in the Western Athletic Conference match Monday in Monday.
Vincent Jiang downed Caden Johnsen 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Agam Singh (6-3, 6-3), Kyle Espiritu (6-4, 6-3), Matt Rodriguez (6-0, 6-2) and Nico Campos (6-2, 6-3) also swept.
Rushil Kadiyala and Alton Torres O’ Calaghan won the lone doubles match, 6-0, 6-1. Johansen forfeited at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
