Barely 10 seconds into the match Friday, Ripon Christian’s Collin Lecain found the back of the net and the rout was on as the Knights downed Argonaut 7-1 to open its Jerry Terpsma Soccer Classic.
Lecain finished with two goals and an assist.
“That has to be my fastest goal, ever,” Lecain said. “I dribbled through all their players, and I saw a shot open, and I just took it.”
Noah Debruyn added a brace and an assist as well for the Knights (2-0) with two long-range goals, one assisted by Mason Clark, and he assisted on one of Lecain’s goals.
“When you are playing center mid you have to facilitate the ball,” Debruyn said. “You get the ball at the top of the 18 sometimes and both of my goals came from outside the 18.
“You have to get your head up and look and if there’s an opening you take it, and there were two openings today so I took them.”
Lecain and Debruyn scored both of their goals in the first half as did Colton Veldstra from a Lecain assist and Daniel Lambdin on a penalty kick for a 6-0 halftime lead. Midway through the second half Nick Varni scooped up a rebound and blasted it into the net for a 7-0 Ripon Christian lead.
Wesley Vander Woude posted three saves for the Knights.
“What I really loved about tonight is how unselfish everyone was,” Ripon Christian coach Danny Koolhaas said. “In a game like this, players can have a tendency to put your head down and want to score individually and I thought our guys did a really good job of trying to build up and not look to shoot often, but try to set up a teammate with a good opportunity.
“I was really happy about that.”
The Mustangs (0-3) from Jackson broke onto the scoreboard with less than 10 seconds left in the game with a goal from Edison Nhek.
The Knights face Wheatland this morning in a semifinal tilt at 11.
