Ripon girls, boys open basketball season with wins

Ripon’s girls basketball team staved off visiting Tokay 52-50 in its season opener Tuesday.

The Indians had a double-digit lead early in the fourth quarter but kept things interesting. Tokay (0-3) took advantage of extra possessions, made three 3-pointers and six of eight free throws down the stretch to get back into the game.

Kailee Inderbitzin paced Ripon with 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Emily Sesser contributed 11 points and seven boards. Vannesah Ponce poured in 10 points, and Gabby Delgado tallied nine to go with eight rebounds. Shayla McKeon grabbed 12 rebounds.

Mia Chapman and Iliana Villareal netted eight points apiece for Tokay.

 

Boys basketball

Ripon 62, Sonora 52

The difference in this back-and-forth battle was Ripon’s run of 10 unanswered points in the final quarter. The Indians converted on 12 of 16 free throws in crunch time.

Ty Herrin led them with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jack Schoolland added 11 points and five rebounds. Victor Alvarellos chimed in with 10 points. Sophomore Marcus Madoski contributed six points and seven boards in his varsity debut. Landon Gillespie tallied eight points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
