Ripon Christian was welcomed to the Southern League with a 3-2 loss to visiting Mariposa Tuesday.

The Knights (0-1, 2-6 overall) will find out in the next week how they stack up in their new league with defending champion LeGrand visiting next Tuesday, Sept. 21.

In the SL opener Tuesday they faced a squad that qualified for the 2009 Sac-Joaquin Section Division-VI playoffs.

The win was Mariposa’s first of the season. To be fair, the Grizzlies (1-0, 1-8) played a fairly tough non-league schedule, and they proved right away that no one should be looking past them by taking a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Ryland Radanovich scored in the 7th minute and later assisted David Medema and Fernando Mendoza’s goals.

“We came out flat in this game, which is exactly the opposite of what I wanted for our first appearance in the Southern League,” RC coach Keith Terpsma said.

Ripon Christian itself proved a little something in the second half by dominating the final 40 minutes of the match, outshooting Mariposa 11-3 in the process. Goalkeeper Jacob Meeuwse was hardly tested in the second half and finished with four saves overall.

Scott Faurè sent a pin-point cross to Mark Van Spronsen on the far post to open scoring for the Knights. Faurè struck with his own goal off a pass from Jon Vander Molen to cap the final score.

“I knew we had it in us, we just needed to capitalize on our chances,” Terpsma said.
Ripon Christian heads to Waterford (1-0, 2-3) Thursday.

At Mistlin Sports Complex Tuesday, the Indians (0-1, 4-7-1) had a tough test to open the new-look TVL schedule.

Bryant Macias extended his team lead with his fifth goal of the season in the first half, but the Yellowjackets (1-0, 3-2) scored twice in the second.

Things don’t get any easier for Ripon, which next faces conference favorite Escalon on the road next Tuesday.
